<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s
spring time. The grass looks greener today. Almost all the snow has melted. The
days will be longer now. The flowers will bloom. The sun will shine brighter
taking away with it the cold winter blues. Nature has so much to offer. Each
day brings with it new avenues to be explored. Old will make way for new.
Growing and ageing is part of life. To enjoy bountiful offerings made by the ever
changing world, we need to be healthy and happy. We often wish to have control
over degeneration and disease. There has to be something that can withhold
ageing, increase life span, promote intelligence, improve strength and prevent disease.
This has to be an ‘elixir’<i>.</i> Something
used by alchemists to change metal into gold… A magical potion that has the
ability to bestow health and prolong life!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
An eleventh century Persian chemist
and physician, Abu Rayhan Biruni wrote in his accounts about India, “They have
a science similar to alchemy, quite distinctive to them. They call it Rasayana;
an ability which incorporates certain procedures, medications and compounds
which are derived from plants. The main principle is to restore the health of
unhealthy and bestow youth to ageing.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He has aptly summarized the
essence of Rasaynas. The Ayurveda texts do have detailed description of these
‘alchemy procedures’ under the name of ‘Rasayana’. The term<i> Rasayana</i> is a combination of two words: <i>Rasa</i> (essence or juice) and <i>Ayana</i>
(path). Thus the literal meaning of this Sanskrit term is path of essence,
which is mainly concerned with rejuvenation, conservation and revitalization of
body as a whole. In classical texts, rasayanas have been defined as something
that obliterates old age and disease (<i>Yat
jaravyadhi nashnam tat rasayanam</i>)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Rasayana therapy is one of the eight branches
of Ayurveda. It enjoys a very special place in the Ayurveda texts. The
importance can be understood from the fact that in the classical text Charka Samhita
(chikitsa sthana), it has been clearly said: “As rasayanas provide longevity,
prevent ageing and other diseases, they are more important. Thus, they will be
described before the disease specific medicines can be discussed.”</div>

Sun has become a
luxury in this festive month of December. I have heard that it has snowed
somewhere in a nearby hill station. Thereby, the wind is too cold here in my
city. I enjoy the tranquility of sleepy morn on a cold Sunday morning. It’s a
little dark outside and the house is still asleep. The blissful silence
enthuses in me the desire to write my next post. I am looking forward to
healthy winter season as I intend to follow the regime mentioned in classical

The winter season or the ‘last ritu of the visarga kala’

is relatively high. The digestive fire or ‘Agni’ is quiet strong. It’s
necessary to feed this fire in order to maintain a balance and to prevent
vitiation of the doshas, especially the vata dosha, during these months. <span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-no-proof: yes;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

On
taking a closer look at the above recommendations, one can clearly observe that
Ayurveda texts mainly advice to stay warm, cozy and eat warm nutritious food
during this season. One should avoid dry, cold and light foods in order to
prevent the vitiation of doshas. Avoid fasting and sleeping during the day.<o:p></o:p><br />

<div>
Some times the question arises in our mind that what is the purpose of Ayurveda. The answer has been provided in the Ancient Ayurvedic texts.</div>
<br />
<div>
<div>
<b>Acharya Vagabhatta </b>in <i>Asatanga Sangrah says that the only way to walk on path of righteousness ( dharma) , to earn a honest living (artha) and to obtain eternal bliss (sukha ) is to have a life. Any individual who desires to have such life, should have utmost respect for Ayurveda . (AH.S.S. 1-5)</i><br />
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
Similarly Acharya Sushruta says that Ayurveda (Ayu means life and Veda means science) is a science of life. Ayurveda has been aptly named as it explains about life, it discusses about life. One is able to live a long life with the help of Ayurveda. (Su.s.1-15)<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Mahrishi Agnivesh </b>has beautifully described the purpose of Ayurveda . He clearly says that the purpose of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and to treat the illness of the ill.<br />
<div>
<i>(C.su.39-23) </i><br />
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
Based on above references we can say that the purpose of Ayurveda is not merely to treat the diseases but to prevent these diseases too. Ayurveda texts lay stress on disease prevention along with providing cures for various illness. In order to enjoy a content life with eternal bliss one needs to be healthy and good health can be achieved by following the principles of Ayurveda.<br />

<i>In my day to day practice, I often
hear from parents -‘Why doesn’t he put more effort in his school work? Why doesn’t he care?
Why is he more interested in watching T.V. or playing online games when he
knows that there is a submission tomorrow?’ As a parent and parenting skills
guide I would like to address this issue keeping my focus on parents with
children in 6-9 grades.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Do you feel that the child has some behavior problem; he
does not care; he is lazy….? No, it is not so. He may be angry or discouraged.
He may be frustrated or not so confident. He may be feeling that it’s not worth
it…. The easiest approach for anyone to handle difficulty is to pretend ‘not to
care’. Actually he cares. All children when not angry or discouraged generally
want to perform well. They like being praised and are keen to seek approval of
their elders. So where did the things go wrong?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While dealing with the issue and interacting with parents I
have realized that there are<b> some common
mistakes that all parents make. <o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Blaming peers, media
or television<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Blaming teachers<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Negative display of
frustration and anger along with reprimanding child<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Misconception that
children are generally lazy <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Undiagnosed attention
and learning disorders</i> <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
These mistakes often lead to demoralization or lack of
motivation in children. Keep in mind that children may be frustrated, discouraged,
and angry, stressed, anxious, disinterested etc . . . . but are not lazy. As a parent,
relate lack of motivation to any of the above and try to find a solution by
taking a more positive approach toward the problem.<o:p></o:p>I have provided below some positive parenting tips that will surely help you in making your child a more enthusiastic learner and achiever. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Six Positive Ways of motivating Your
child<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
1.<b><i>Channelize your child’s energy.<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Every person around you is motivated , only difference is
that each individual is motivated towards different things. Rather than calling
the child unmotivated, we can say that the child is motivated towards not
performing, resisting parents efforts etc. He is actually putting in a lot of
effort to maintain that position. Children are energetic brainy people. But we
as parents are more experienced at handling people and getting our tasks done.
So why not use your experience to channelize them and to motivate them towards
concrete achievements. Start thinking differently Handle them in a different , friendlier
manner. Steer them towards a positive tomorrow that can only be achieved with
sustained hard work.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
2.<b><i>Develop a genuine interest in their
interest.</i></b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let me give you an example here. Your child is interested in
playing basketball but you are keen he learns tennis. You enroll him in tennis
classes. Result: every day you need to push him to get ready for the class.
Your conclusion , he is not interested in sports.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now let us reverse the scene. You enroll him in a basketball
coaching camp with the thought that the main aim is to play a sport to have a
better outlook towards life and for good health. Choosing tennis or basketball
is insignificant. Result: He is ready before time, remembers the scheduled days
of the class, feels closer to you ,shares his experiences with you about the
class and other day to day activities feeling that you as a parent are with him
and understand him. This lays the foundation for a stronger bond between you
and your child .<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The choice is yours and,you as a parent, would like to
choose the best for your child. In our desire to improve them we often miss the
necessary aspect of connecting to them. Keep in mind that all children are
basically positive people who like to be praised about their actions.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><i>3. Do not reprimand or blame, talk to your child.<o:p></o:p></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Talk to them. Accept that they too can be frustrated,
discouraged, stressed, not so confident at times. Understand and accept their
feelings. Preaching to them about hard work is not good enough and you already
know that it doesn’t work. Connect to them. Understand their problems and if
they need your help, help them. Find the cause, set approachable targets,
discuss ways of achieving the targets in set duration and then trust them
enough to leave them free to achieve those targets.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

the achievement these goals. Praise them for their efforts and encourage them
to wards improvement irrespective of the fact whether they achieve their goals
or not. Keep reminding them of their positives and when they are in a mood to
hear, discuss with them ways in which they can do better. But remember, life is
beyond class rooms and disappointments. As a parent if you able to encourage

making it an interesting way of expressing the inner desires and dreams. It’s

<b><br /></b>
<b>Useful components</b>: Apples are a good source of
Vitamin C and B- complex vitamins along with fiber and anti-oxidants. They also
contain some amount of minerals like potassium, phosphorus, iron and calcium.
All these components are essential for optimum growth and overall wellbeing.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Properties and benefits</b>: Traditionally raw apples
stimulate Vata dosha.They have a positive effect on Pitta and Kapha Doshas.
However when peeled and cooked with spices, it has the ability to balance the
doshas. Apple fruit is cooling, sweet, sour and astringent in taste. It
provides relief in constipation, bleeding gums and stomatitis. As the skin is
hard to digest and may cause gas, peel and chew a raw apple about an hour after
meals. This cleans the tongue and teeth and may help in relieving constipation
too. Apple juice is helpful in Pitta conditions. It’s helpful in reducing
burning sensation in gastritis, colitis and bladder infections.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Being
rich in bioflavonoids makes apple a good source of vitamin C. They also contain
fiber pectin. This is helpful in lowering cholesterol and blood lipid
levels.Apple is an excellent rejuvenator that strengthens the immune system and
heart. Apple contains malic acid, thus it is helpful in reducing blood uric
acid levels. It has the ability to cleanse the intestines. One can easily
reduce weight by following a simple apple diet i.e. have 1 apple before each
main meal. This really works as I have tried it on many patients.<o:p></o:p><br />

It
is believed in Ayurveda that <b>fruits
picked at wrong time </b>i.e. when they are under or over ripe and <b>fruits eaten in the wrong season</b> i.e.
fruits from the cold storage which are available in stores when they are
naturally not in season, are not healthy to eat. They create digestive toxins or
ama in the body. So in order to have maximum nutritional benefits its best to
eat local seasonal fruits preferably ripened on the tree. This ensures better
digestion and maximizes the nutritional benefits of that fruit to the body.<o:p></o:p><br />

The
season is changing and this affects us physically and mentally. This is the
time of the year when there is maximum chance of dosha imbalance. One may
experience fatigue, stress, mild constipation, Amalapitta (Acidity),
Sheetpitta (Urticaria), Kandu( Itching) etc. This can be prevented by
maintaining the internal balance of doshas . Establish a regular daily routine,
stay calm, warm and nourished. Drink lukewarm water and sip spiced green tea.
Utilize the energy within and focus attention inwards. Establish healthy
routine, plan new beginnings, take care of your health and cherish the
beautiful season to understand your own self, holistically.<o:p></o:p></div>

Stress is normal
physical response to situations that make a person feel threatened or insecure.
Stress response is generated when a person senses danger, which could be real
or imaginary. It’s a way our body has been attuned naturally to protect itself
and be secure from danger. Some stress is needed to keep us motivated and to
accomplish our goals. Stress becomes a problem when it starts affecting our
physical, emotional and social health in a negative way. We need professional
help when stress starts affecting our health, mood, relationships,
productivity……. i.e. the overall quality of life. It is not so difficult to
manage stress. The secret lies in our own ability to handle the day to day

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I am always amazed by
life. Each second that unfolds brings with it a fresh new moment that needs to
be felt and lived. Today, when I look back, I realize that ‘life’ is my best
teacher. Each person I met, each incident that happened, each path that I
traversed, had a purpose – To make me a better individual who is at peace with
her own self. Today I feel like sharing some of the lessons I have learnt in
life, some lessons that have given me the power to be positive in life. A voice
within me says that these lessons can do the same for you</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>1. There is something
very positive about life, it passes.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Life is a mix of good times and bad times but nothing lasts
forever. Sun sets, moon rises. Seasons change. Winter is always followed by
summer. Night always makes way for the day. Facing tough times? Don’t worry
they will not last long. Feeling too happy and content? Don’t get too attached
as this too shall pass. Enjoy the cocktail ….. It’s life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>2. Let go of what you no
longer need.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I learnt this the tough way. We like to form attachments in
life. It could be objects, places, people, thoughts, ideas, beliefs….. There is
actually nothing to be gained from clinging to past failures, old grudges,
feelings that hurt you, people or relationships you cannot relate to… Let them
go. Donate your old clothes, delete your old mails, clean your desk…. Keep your
thoughts, relationships, home, work area etc. clutter free. This surely makes
life simple and more interesting. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>3. Learn to feel and
live the present moment<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I feel that there is some magic in the present moment. Feel
it, experience it, live it. Be thankful that you are alive and breathing. Be
hopeful as you have the power to build your future by making judicious use of
present. The past is gone and future cannot be seen. The present is precious.
Live it. Feel like doing something, do it now.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>4. Raise a child</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have learnt a lot from children. Their simplicity,
curiosity and innocence are infectious. Being a parent has made me more
responsible, compassionate and empathic. I have something to look forward to
each day. The simple routines that I share with my children make my life more
meaningful. I feel immense pleasure and satisfaction that I have done my part
in the world by raising kids who are strong enough to make positive
contributions in creating a future world that would be better than today. You
can feel the same pleasure and satisfaction. Go ahead, raise a child.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>5. Having a hobby is
therapeutic<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Life becomes tough at times. There are certain phases and
issues in life which are too personal to share with someone yet have the power
to erode us from within. Develop a hobby. Its therapeutic and the best way to
release the secret passions from within. It could be anything… reading,
writing, painting, music, meditation, art and craft, cooking, gardening… The
list is endless. Understand what you like and spend some time daily with your
‘hobby’.<b> </b>Cultivate your positive
interests. I can assure, nothing more is needed. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>6. Stay connected to
your roots<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Imagine a tree. It has so many branches, leaves, flowers and
fruits. Life thrives in its parts till they are connected to the roots. Same
can be related to us. We have to move on from our parental homes in pursuit of
personal growth and development. This is a necessity but stay connected to your
parents and family. In today’s scenario it’s really very easy. A small message,
a simple phone call can do the trick. Regular visits are the icing on the cake.
The thought that we have someone in life to fall back to, gives us immense
strength to face the day to day challenges in our life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>7. Relationships are a
part of life, not life<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In my clinical practice I come across many people. I have
seen that people who get hurt most are the ones who make relationships their
main priority in life. This gives rise to profound expectations. When
expectations are not met, feelings get hurt and the associated pain is very
deep. If we want to live a happy life it’s always better to focus on some
personal goal and not to people or objects.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>8. Be Generative<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I became aware of this term when I studied the stages of
development by Erik Erikson and I immediately got bowled over by it. Being
generative is establishing and guiding the next generation. It includes being
productive and creative. Raising a positive family or working towards the
betterment of society is being generative and gives a deep satisfaction of
accomplishment.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By giving us a chance to be born as a human, God has given
us the ability to explore, understand and learn from life. Be soft. Do not let
the world rob you of your compassion and faith to make you hard. Do not let the
pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride
that even though many in the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful
place.</div>

I have an emotional attachment with the Jamun tree. We have
one in our backyard. It has been standing there for almost three generations
now as it was planted by my father and now his grandchildren play under its
shade. They love to show off their purple tongues after eating the fruits. We
watch in fondness as we too had done the same. My mother often complains about
the mess created by the leaves and the ripe fruits that keep falling off the
tree, still this seems insignificant to her as the tree is a witness to many
naughty childhood stories of her children and grandchildren ... in the long, hot tropical
summer afternoons. </div>

<b>Properties and benefits</b>: According to Ayurveda jamun causes urine retention

in nature. By virtue of its properties, it increases ‘Vata’ Dosha and has a
balancing effect on ‘Kapha’ and ‘Pitta’ Doshas. Due to this the traditional
system of medicine recommends its use in diabetes, diarrhoea and menstrual
disorders especially menorrhagia. It also improves digestion and is beneficial
in emaciation, worm infestations and infections. It’s various parts and

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Calligraphy'; font-size: 8pt;">Home remedies are simple techniques that
can be easily done at home in order to provide relief to various symptoms
associated with the disease or problem. Most of the ingredients used are
present at home and are used in our daily routine. Home remedies are very
effective in providing symptomatic relief and can also prevent the further development
of the disorder. They can also be supportive to the main treatment prescribed
by the physician. However they are not a substitute to the prescribed treatment
and thus its recommended that if the illness persists do consult a physician.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

When an infant is born, young exhausted mothers often get to
listen, ‘Be patient, once the little one starts sleeping through the night, you
will be less exhausted.’ It’s a myth. As the child grows, responsibilities grow
and we as parents need to grow along with our children. Parenting is an art.
Each childhood stage requires the parent to evolve. Our desire, to raise
healthy, loving children with positive values and ability to handle the demands
of life positively, keeps us going. Parenting is a life long Journey. We might
get tired, bored, exhausted….on the way, but we also cherish the joys, bonds,
laughs, successes….. we experience. Here are ten ways of Joyous Parenting.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li>Be a participant not an onlooker. Join children in their
world. Talk with them. Listen to them.</li>
<li>Encourage them. Build their confidence.</li>
<li>Join the giggles. Why should you miss out ;)?</li>
<li>Reverse roles, sometimes let them lead.</li>
<li>Hug them, tumble them, play with them…. A pillow fight is
such fun!</li>
<li>Empower them. Let them try new things.</li>
<li>Connect with them. Encourage emotional expression.</li>
<li>Prefer family meetings or a cuddle to time out</li>
<li>Cultivate activities that you enjoy doing together</li>
<li>Have your own ‘My Time’ to recharge your own self and…. Join
the fun</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Being a parent is special. Tiring, yes it is. But at the end
of the day, when we sit back and think, our life would not have been the same
without our children. Their loving smile and a trusting hug is enough to give
us the energy to face anything in this world.</div>

“I believe that, what we become depends on what our fathers

Whenever I ask a father, how it feels to be a
dad, most of them become nostalgic, their faces become gentle, smile deepens
and their eyes tell it all. When the same question is put to a child, but in
somewhat different way- ‘How do you feel about your dad’; the answers are
varied. The answers mainly depend upon the types of fathers they are growing up
with. For some a Dad is a fun loving person who spends time with them, plays
with them, teaches them, praises them…… For others he is a person who gets
money to the house but hardly has the time to be with the people he is earning
money for. For some he could be indulgent ,who easily gives in to their wishes,
for others he could be someone who mostly likes to dictate his own terms and there
are some who hardly know their dad as he had left them when they were young or
it could be that their mom left him…… the answers are endless.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fathers who bond
with their children have a positive influence on their overall development.
There are studies that reveal that children whose fathers are involved in care
giving are better adjusted and are less likely to experience educational, health,
emotional and behavioural problems. It has been found that fathers who are more
involved in infant care giving have infants with greater cognitive development
than fathers who are less involved. As a parent, providing the best care for
our children is our desire and the basic need for our child. Doing this is
simple. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b> Be a Father who Communicates effectively: </b>Good
communication is essential for good relationships. A relationship is considered
good if the people involved are able to convey their feelings and thoughts
without any fear of being judged. For effective communication with your
children, learn to listen carefully without overreacting. Children start hiding
their inner feelings if they feel that you overreact. Liston to them calmly,
this will encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings, this would
strengthen your bond as a father and you will have the privilege to be a part
of the inner world of your children. <b><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b> </b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Be a Nurturing Father: </b>To nurture means
to promote healthy development of the child and includes physical, social and
emotional aspects. Fathers play a critical role in providing loving care. The
concept of nurturing is mainly associated with mother-child relationship. But
as a father you too can nurture and that too in your own special way. The style
is generally different from the polite caring bestowed by a mother. Fathers
mostly engage in physically stimulating and exciting activities that induce
emotional touch. This helps in promoting assertiveness in the child. Spending
time together, playing games together or a simple tossing and tumbling time
together can help you bond better. The earlier you start, the better the bond
is. Taking over a few responsibilities of child care from your partner will
also show her that you care for her. <b><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b> </b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b> Be a Fun loving Father : </b>Tickle them,
hug them, rock them, cuddle them, do chores together, applaud openly for their
achievements ………… let them feel your physical presence. Help them overcome
their inhibitions. Encourage laughter around you. You have all the right to
invade their physical space. This has a lot of advantages. They will get used
to talking and sharing their everyday life with you. I can assure from personal
experience that the habit stays when children grow up and are busy with their lives;
they still want to share their experiences with you. <b><o:p></o:p></b></div>

<b> Be an involved Father: </b>The earlier you
start the better. Conception is an indication that life is about to change.
Your decision to have the baby indicates you are willing for the change. Be
there for your partner. A lot is happening with her. She is changing-
physically, mentally and socially .Instead of being a silent observer be an
active participant. You will cherish these moments later in life. Be there for
those doctor’s visits, birthdays, PTA’s….
The time spent with your children will help you to understand them
better. Keep growing with them, emotionally. Being an involved father gives you the power
to subtly mould their life towards a positive attitude. You will unknowingly
equip them to be stronger individuals; who feel strong because they have the
assurance that they are cared, loved and needed.<b><o:p></o:p></b></div>

<b>Be a benevolent and just Father: </b>We all
like to discipline children. This is nice but be clear about what you expect
from your children. Set rules for children but also give clear guidelines as to
what is expected from them. Endorse the limits set by your partner for your
children. Children should always get the message that both of you are together
as a couple and they need to respect both. However do not go overboard with
discipline. Children should never feel bullied by their parent. Remember to be
a benevolent and just father. In case of siblings, take care not to pacify one
at the cost of other child.<b><o:p></o:p></b></div>

God has given you
a very precious gift ‘your child’. With this Gift he has given you the
responsibility of being a father and a chance to shape the life of another
human being. Sit back and think. What
kind of father are you? Are you the one who is actively and positively involved
in the lives of his children? Are you someone who spends time with his
children, is there beside them to help them while they learn to catch up on
life or are you the one who is too busy in his own work, hardly knows the grades
they are in or who their friends are? It’s you, who knows the answer to the
above questions. However I am sure of one thing that you as a father love your
children and want them to be happy in life. Being a father is a very beautiful
responsibility in the world. It teaches us to be loving, humble, generous, giving,
strong … all at the same time. Nothing else can match up to this!!</div>

keep all those things that touch us deep, really deep. These little secrets
have a habit of popping up from that secret reservoir within our heart,
consciously or subconsciously. These are our precious memories that have the
power to influence our thoughts…. feelings…..and….. finally our actions. Today
I want to share something from the depths of my heart. It’s a short story. It is a powerful story. So powerful, that it has stayed with me,
all these years. When you read it you will understand why it is so special to
me and why do I narrate it whenever I feel the need to inspire someone. I can
promise you something, when you read the complete story….. You might do the
same.</div>

Anna stood up
as soon as the surgeon came out of the operating room. Her eyes asked many
questions but all she could say in a choked voice was: “How is my little son?
When can I see him?” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“I am sorry,
we did all we could but the little chap did not make it.”Replied the surgeon. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Why do little children get cancer?”
cried Anna. “Don’t you care about us God? Where were you when we needed you the

“You can spend some time with your son. The nurses will be
out in a moment. Later he will be transported to medical college.” Said the
surgeon, gently.</div>

Anna requested
one nurse to stay with her while she said final goodbye to her son, Sam.
Lovingly she ran her fingers through his thick curly hair. Gently she caressed
his face. “It was Sam’s idea to donate his body for the students of medicine.
Initially I was offended by the idea. But he insisted. “said Anna. Sam had
said, “I won’t be using it after I die. May be it will help some other boy to
live some more days.” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“My son, Sam had a
heart of gold.” said a proud mother. Then it was time to leave.</div>

She proudly
walked out of the hospital, with her head held high. It was the place where she
had fought some toughest battles of her life in the past six months. She put
Sam’s belonging on the seat beside her. Driving home was difficult. It was even
harder to enter the empty house. She carried the plastic bag with Sam’s
belongings into his room. She placed his model cars, colors …. And other personal
stuff exactly the way he liked to keep. Then she lay down on his bed, hugged
his pillow and cried herself to sleep.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Anna woke up from sleep around midnight. Beside her on the
bed was a neatly folded letter. It said, </div>

“Dear Mom,</div>

I know you’re going to miss me; but don’t think that I will
ever forget you, or stop loving you, just ’cause I’m not around to say I LOVE
YOU. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day. Someday we will see
each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won’t be
so lonely, that’s okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with.
But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn’t like the same
things we boys do. You’ll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Don’t be sad thinking about me. This really is
a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me
around, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool.
I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn’t look like any of
his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to
see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God’s knee and talk to Him, like
I was somebody important. That’s when I told Him that I wanted to write you a
letter, to tell you good-bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn’t
allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal
pen to write you this letter. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is
going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to
one of the questions you asked Him ‘Where was He when I needed him?’ “God said
He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He
was right there, as He always is with all His children.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oh, I almost
forgot to tell you. I don’t hurt anymore. The cancer is all gone. I’m glad
because I couldn’t stand that pain anymore and God couldn’t stand to see me
hurt so much, either. That’s when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me.
The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?</div>

God has a reason
for allowing things to happen….. We may never understand His wisdom but we
simply have to trust His will. He has a plan for each one of us. Being our
Father, he will always do his best for us. Everybody has tough times in life
and we often question “Why Us”. We are just a part of the bigger picture, not
the whole picture. The essence to a satisfied life lies in accepting this fact.
Take one step at a time, live each moment when it comes; stop blaming others or
your own self for your problems. Inner peace begins when you choose not to
allow an event or some person to control your emotions. One cannot give up on
life. One has to gather strength, find ways and move on. Falling down is a part
of life. To get up and start walking again is living life.</div>

<span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span>I love when it rains. The cloudy sky,
the soothing downpour, the water droplets resting on green leaves, the
beautiful rainbows…..all are welcome after the scorching heat of the tropical
summers. According to Ayurveda the year can be divided into six seasons. Each
season (ritu) lasting for two months. The Grishma ritu (summer season) is
followed by Varsha ritu (Rainy season). Ritu means season and charya means regimen.<span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="background: #FFF7EE; color: #002939;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">Ritucharya is the observance </span></span><span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; color: #002939;">of diet and regimen according to the seasonal

earlier article I had talked about the Ayurvedic regimen for summers. Since the
rains have already started in India, It’s appropriate to discuss about the
Varsha ritu charya or the Regimen for the rainy season as per Ayurvedic Texts.<span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Varsha ritu or the
rainy season is the first season of the ‘Visarg Kaal’ i.e. the southern cycle
of the sun. The heat of the sun starts to reduce in this season. The breeze
becomes gentle. The physical ‘bal’ or strength starts to increase moderately as
compared to the previous ‘grishma ritu’. However the ‘jatharagni’ or the
digestive power is still low. The sky is predominantly cloudy and there is an
increase in the atmospheric moisture. Thus the ‘vayu’ dosha is primarily
vitiated and there is secondary vitiation of ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Due to the
vitiation of doshas, this is a season when we are more prone to diseases.
Various methods to balance the doshas along with effective measures to enhance
digestive functions need to be adopted. Panchkarma is recommended during the
rainy season.

tend to get wet during this season. </li>

experience of being a parent. So what do I have to tell them? A lot has changed
since the time they were parents. Life was a little more simple and straight.
Today the life is much busy. The hustle and bustle of today’s fast paced life
makes me wonder, whether our children are missing out some essential lessons of
life. Grandparents have experienced
love, happiness, joy and satisfaction. They have travelled the road of
life. They have handled sorrows, faced
all the challenges with integrity and courage. They can be the experienced
teachers to their grandchildren and can teach them the values essential for
growing up into wholesome individuals.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
‘<i>Grandparents
are the finest teachers the children could ever have</i>.’</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most grandparents
would agree with me that being a grandparent is more enjoyable than being a
parent. At this juncture the life is more relaxed, responsibilities are comparatively
less .Grandparents have more time to enjoy the childhood and the process of
growing up of their grandchildren as compared to their own children. It is
evident that the bond between the grandparent and grandchild is special; it is
spontaneous, light hearted and friendly. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Grandparents can play a significant role in developing the
following values in their grandchildren:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Happiness</b>: It is
the first and the most essential lesson to be taught. It is an art that has to
be learnt. There are people who crib despite having everything and there are
people who sail happily through the toughest of the storms. I want you to be
the ‘role models’ to your grandchild. Make the most of your day. Be generous.
Be happy. The joy you radiate is infectious. The children will catch it from
you. Learning to be happy at this age would enable them to face the challenges
of life ahead….happily.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Love: </b>How often we say to our child, “I will
give you a candy if you hug me.” This is not love. In fact it is a lesson that makes your child
calculative and manipulative. Love does not bloom with conditions. It is
expressed in a gentle touch; it is cultivated by doing things together. Children
need to learn about being loving persons who are compassionate about the
feelings of others. Show them that you care about others and imitators as they are,
the children will learn from you.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Spirituality</b>:
It’s the faith that would keep them moving in life. It’s the faith that would
keep them standing tall in the toughest of storm. Build their faith. Teach them
to pray and meditate. Teach them to be spiritual. Let them join you when you
pray. Children learn by observation. Read them a passage from your holy
scriptures before going to bed. Talk to them about your faiths and positive
beliefs. Give them an anchor to hold on to, later in their life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Honesty: </b>Teaching the lesson of honesty is simple.
You have to be honest as a family. Be fair, keep your promises and do not lie
to each other. Children imitate adult behavior. However inconvenient, uphold
family rules. At times in our affection and love for our children we try to
cover up their mistakes. I would suggest that do not cover up the mistakes of
your grandchildren, do not offer excuses for their undesirable behavior. Teach
them to accept their mistakes. Being honest and genuinely apologetic about ones
mistakes is a lesson to be learnt early in life.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Courage: </b>Facing the day to day challenges of life,
without being stressed is not easy. Handling ups and downs in life requires
courage. To make your child courageous let them experience the reality of life.
Offer a secure environment to your grandchild but do not shield them too much.
Let them understand that life is a mix of positive and negative. Someone in the
family may die, someone may get hurt. Be with them at these moments. Hear about
their feelings. Make them understand that these things happen in life. Reach
out to help others, so that they learn this simple lesson early in childhood,
that helping others reduces our own pain.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Today I look up to
the best teachers for my children, the grandparents, to teach the values of
happiness, spirituality, love, honesty and courage. I reach out to them, to
seek help in creating a compassionate youth for tomorrow. The task of creating
a younger generation, which is empathic towards the emotions of other fellow beings,
is not easy. But In grandparents, I as a parent seek positive and experienced
role models who can help us raise children; who will grow up to create a world
that is a little more loving than it is at present.</div>

Today was her third
visit to my clinic. She used to come once in a week. A middle aged ,smart looking, individual who had
come looking for comfort in the peaceful world of Ayurveda with a desire to
find freedom from headache that refused to go. She said, she had no energy in her,
nothing much to look forward to in her life. I looked into her eyes. I missed

She is just an
example of many individuals who at some point of life have felt that they have
no enthusiasm to move on in life, who have lost hope and faith towards a better

their present and be not so enthusiastic about future. But there is more to
life. We need to look beyond our own emotions,
towards people who have enough
faith to keep going ……..despite all odds.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Today’s article is a
tribute to all such people around us, who have the potential to take life as it
comes, who have mastered the art of living in the present moment, who have
found their own way to subtly challenge life, who have risen
above the need to be dependent on someone other than their own self for their
happiness. They are the people who have promised to themselves that they will
never give up</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I call them <b>‘Silent Warriors’</b>. I know many but I
will share about only three such people today.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The couple had been trying to have a child of
their own from the past many years. The lady had two miscarriages and one still
birth. She was pregnant again . That day ,the medical examination revealed, their conceived child had some genetic defect . They
should not continue the pregnancy. It
was terminated. Doctors advised that she should not try to conceive
again, it was not safe for her. The life had come to a standstill. Their
strongest desire of being a parent would never come true.. Their genuine desire
had given them the courage to challenge the destiny. It was the lowest point of
their life and at that moment they took a decision. They decided; they will not
give up. The couple adopted two children
as it would complete their family. Twenty Years have passed since then and they could experience the joy of being parents ,for they chose ‘not to give up’. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Every morning I go for a walk in a nearby
park. The park is well maintained and has a reputation for having most
beautiful seasonal flowers . A walk in this park is considered therapeutic due
to well maintained lawns, beautiful flowers and the pleasant aroma that
surrounds you even after you have left the park. Every day I noticed a man ,
must be in his sixties, watering the plants. He would be there every day. I got
interested in him due to the satisfaction and joy shown on his face while he
was watering the plants. I was curious. He did not look like a Gardner. He was
there every day, same time…. On some days when I did not feel like going for a
walk, I went , just to check if he was there. And yes he would be there. At
times I felt jealous of the contentment reflected on his face. I often wondered
, how could watering plants in a park make someone so happy? Unable to control
my curiosity I sought the answer from him. The answer was a revelation. Two
years back he lost his only son in an accident. His son was engaged to be married.
They were planning his wedding. The shock was too much for the couple to cope.
Days changed into months but they were finding it difficult to accept that the
centre of their life was no more. He was retired thus could not seek the solace of his work.
Then one day while sitting in this park he felt his son was around and wanted
them to be happy. That day he decided to 'take charge of his life'. He ‘adopted’ the park and started to take care
of it. Now he had something to take care of. Decisions like what to plant, how
to plant etc. kept him occupied. His love and care made the park alive . The
park blossomed and so did their lives. It lifted the sadness away from their
home.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Our news paper lands
at our doorstep every morning at 6.30 a.m. I had got used to reading paper with
my early morning cup of tea. Suddenly the time of newspaper delivery started to fluctuate. I could not take it
anymore after a week and called the newspaper vendor to complain. The phone was
answered by his son. He informed that his father had a paralytic attack . He
would not be able to deliver news paper any more so they have hired a boy to
fulfill the job. I felt sad for him. Five months passed. I still missed the old
man because his punctual delivery gave a relaxed start to my day. It was sixth
month since that phone conversation. Then, the news paper started to arrive
again at 6.30 a.m. in morning. Initially I thought they must have hired someone
new. Overwhelmed by the timely delivery for almost a week now , I decided to
praise the new delivery boy. Next morning <i> </i>I waited for him outside our gate. I was
surprised by what I saw. It was ‘Him’ again. His gait revealed what he had gone
through. I had no words. He smiled at me. I could feel the water at the back of
my eyes. He spoke. He said, he felt he simply could not imagine himself bound
to bed all his life. He had suffered attack on his left side. Doctors had said
that seeing his age , chances of recovery were low. But he decided, ‘not to
give up’. He had a keen desire to ride his cycle and deliver the news paper. So
he gave paralysis a tough fight and won. Hats off to him!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have no more words. Compared to these ‘Silent Warriors’ my
problems seem insignificant. These silent warriors exist all around us,
sometimes very near to us, but so engulfed are we in our own sorrows that we
are unable to see them, feel them. Look beyond your tears. The world has a lot
to offer. I draw my strength from these silent warriors. I salute them for
their courage , optimism and positive strength. When feeling low, just sit
back, relax and look for silent warriors around you. If this does not work ,
seek professional help but NEVER LOOSE HOPE AND NEVER GIVE UP ON LIFE.<br />

<b>“Balanced diet

above thought as the basis, the condition of nature and body in six seasons
along with the healthy regimen or ‘Charya’ for each season has been explored. Keeping
the present season in limelight, I would share the regimen mentioned in

According to Ayurveda, chilled foods and
beverages disrupt the digestive power called Agni. The Agni or digestive power
can be compared to burning logs. If we dump cold water over burning logs the
fire goes out. Thereby indigestion, acidity, reduced appetite….follow. Grishma
ritu has been described as a season of dehydration, exhaustion and lack of
energy. The key to good health in
summers is to keep this ‘Agni’ balanced.

moment I held the little infant in my arms, a little seed of compassion was
planted in my heart. I had worked together with God, along with my partner to
procreate another human being with a mind body and soul. Now I had the power to
nurture the destiny of our young child to some extent. With power comes great
responsibility. I had the responsibility of raising a child in such a way that
some day he would bloom into an individual who is able to handle the daily
demands of life effortlessly.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

parenting. As I tried to adjust to the new parenting roles how I desperately
wished for a manual which could lay down the rules that would help to raise
healthy, confident and happy children. However each child is different and has
to be nurtured accordingly.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"> Every
parent wishes to be a “good” parent and desires that their children behave in
socially acceptable ways. This desire creates the need for positive parenting.
Positive parenting focuses on nurturing the best within our children. Instead
of focusing on the negatives and trying desperately to correct it, the focus
should be on the human strengths and virtues. This makes the negatives
insignificant and paves way for a confident and well adjusted child.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
