The Elixir of life : Rasayana

This article has published in Ayurveda Mantra/April-May 2016

The Elixir of life: RASAYANA

It’s spring time. The grass looks greener today. Almost all the snow has melted. The days will be longer now. The flowers will bloom. The sun will shine brighter taking away with it the cold winter blues. Nature has so much to offer. Each day brings with it new avenues to be explored. Old will make way for new. Growing and ageing is part of life. To enjoy bountiful offerings made by the ever changing world, we need to be healthy and happy. We often wish to have control over degeneration and disease. There has to be something that can withhold ageing, increase life span, promote intelligence, improve strength and prevent disease. This has to be an ‘elixir’. Something used by alchemists to change metal into gold… A magical potion that has the ability to bestow health and prolong life!
An eleventh century Persian chemist and physician, Abu Rayhan Biruni wrote in his accounts about India, “They have a science similar to alchemy, quite distinctive to them. They call it Rasayana; an ability which incorporates certain procedures, medications and compounds which are derived from plants. The main principle is to restore the health of unhealthy and bestow youth to ageing.”
He has aptly summarized the essence of Rasaynas. The Ayurveda texts do have detailed description of these ‘alchemy procedures’ under the name of ‘Rasayana’. The term Rasayana is a combination of two words: Rasa (essence or juice) and Ayana (path). Thus the literal meaning of this Sanskrit term is path of essence, which is mainly concerned with rejuvenation, conservation and revitalization of body as a whole. In classical texts, rasayanas have been defined as something that obliterates old age and disease (Yat jaravyadhi nashnam tat rasayanam)
Rasayana therapy is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda. It enjoys a very special place in the Ayurveda texts. The importance can be understood from the fact that in the classical text Charka Samhita (chikitsa sthana), it has been clearly said: “As rasayanas provide longevity, prevent ageing and other diseases, they are more important. Thus, they will be described before the disease specific medicines can be discussed.”

Types of Rasayana

Rasayanas can be classified in multifarious ways.

Ø  According to purpose :
- Naimittika Rasayana (promote specific vitality in specific disease)
-  Kamaya Rasayana    (promote normal health)
·         Prankamaya( promote vitality and longevity)
·         Medhakamaya(promote intelligence)
·         Srikamaya(Promote beauty and complexion)

Ø  According to place of therapy
- Kutipraveshik Rasayana (indoor regimen)
- Vatatapik Rasayana (outdoor regimen)

Ø  According to diet and lifestyle
-Aushada Rasayana (drug based regimen)
-Ahara Rasayana (diet based regimen)
-Achaar Rasayana (lifestyle based regimen)

 Benefits of Rasayana

Rasayana chikitsa (treatment) is a specialized section of ayurveda. It mainly promotes good health by resurgence of metabolism and enhancement of immunity. It has the power to slow down the ageing process. It increases the life span of individual by improving the resistance to diseases. Rasayana procedures nourish the body, prevent degenerative changes and illnesses. It has been mentioned in ancient ayurveda texts that rasayanas enhance intelligence, memory, strength, youthfulness, sheen, vigor and vitality. They also ensure optimal physical stamina, de-stress and relax the mind. Several studies done on rasayana medications have confirmed their antioxidant, hepato-protective and immunomodulator effects.

Rasayana Examples

Plant sources: Embelica officinalis, Terminalia chebula, Tinospora cordifolia etc.
Natural sources: Iron, gold, pearl copper etc.
Food sources: Honey, cow’s milk, clarified butter etc.
Ayurveda formulations: Chayavanprash avleh, Brahma rasayana etc.

Today in our rapid paced, demanding life we have realized the need to shift our focus towards relaxation and rejuvenation. For an emerging generation of health conscious people with desire for calmer and healthier lifestyle; the rasayana therapy can restore and upgrade their health status. In times where natural health, happiness and wellbeing are veiled by the buildup of toxins because of too busy daily life, the need for a comprehensive discipline like ‘Rasayana chikitsa’ can be strongly felt. Rasayana therapy is a multifaceted approach of taking care of body mind and spirit. It has positive effect on the overall wellbeing of an individual by nourishing body, boosting immunity, building strength, enhancing resistance, restoring vitality and stamina; thereby inducing longevity and good health.

HEMANT Ritu Charya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the winter

HEMANT Ritu Charya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the winter

Sun has become a luxury in this festive month of December. I have heard that it has snowed somewhere in a nearby hill station. Thereby, the wind is too cold here in my city. I enjoy the tranquility of sleepy morn on a cold Sunday morning. It’s a little dark outside and the house is still asleep. The blissful silence enthuses in me the desire to write my next post. I am looking forward to healthy winter season as I intend to follow the regime mentioned in classical ayurvedic texts. I share the tips here with you.

The winter season or the ‘last ritu of the visarga kala’ lasts from mid November to mid January. During this period the human strength is relatively high. The digestive fire or ‘Agni’ is quiet strong. It’s necessary to feed this fire in order to maintain a balance and to prevent vitiation of the doshas, especially the vata dosha, during these months.

Hemant Ritu Charya

Diet
Lifestyle
Food should be madhur (sweet), guru (heavy) and Amla (Sour), Lavan ( salt)

Freshly harvested Rice, wheat, corn, urad dal (black gram), yava (barley), honey, should be a part of diet.

Ghrit (Clarified butter), butter, paneer (cottage cheese), cheese, milk and milk products are recommended.

It’s positive to have jaggery, sugarcane and other types of sweets in this season.

All types of meat, fish, chicken and poultry can be had. Even wine is recommended.

Potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, apples, guava, dry fruits, dates, etc can be consumed.

All kinds of tea, hot water etc is drink of choice in this season.
Ayurveda recommends Abhyanga or body massage with oils like sesame, mustard etc. followed by steam bath.

Prefer to stay in warm cozy places. Use heavy curtains and thick warm blankets. Wear warm woolen clothes.

Sitting in sun and in front of a fireplace is also recommended

It’s a very good season for heavy exercises and vigorous indoor workouts are recommended.

Dress warmly and avoid too many outdoor activities.

Indulgence in sex as per the physical desire and strength is also recommended in this season.

Some more suggestions to stay healthy this winter

On taking a closer look at the above recommendations, one can clearly observe that Ayurveda texts mainly advice to stay warm, cozy and eat warm nutritious food during this season. One should avoid dry, cold and light foods in order to prevent the vitiation of doshas. Avoid fasting and sleeping during the day.

I sincerely hope by following the regimen mentioned above one can stay healthy during the season. I am looking forward to questions and suggestions related to the above topic.

#Purpose Of #Ayurveda

Some times the question arises in our mind that what is the purpose of Ayurveda. The answer has been provided in the Ancient Ayurvedic texts.

Acharya Vagabhatta in Asatanga Sangrah says that the only way to walk on  path of righteousness ( dharma) , to earn a honest living (artha) and to obtain eternal bliss (sukha ) is to have a life. Any individual who desires to have such life, should have utmost respect for Ayurveda . (AH.S.S. 1-5)

Similarly Acharya Sushruta says that Ayurveda        (Ayu means life and Veda means science) is a science of life. Ayurveda  has been aptly named as it explains about life, it discusses about life. One is able to live a long life with the help of Ayurveda. (Su.s.1-15)

Mahrishi Agnivesh has beautifully described the purpose of Ayurveda . He clearly says that the purpose of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and to treat the illness of the ill.
(C.su.39-23)

Based on above references we can say that the purpose of Ayurveda is not merely to treat the diseases but to prevent these diseases too. Ayurveda texts lay stress on disease prevention along with providing cures for various illness. In order to enjoy a content life with eternal bliss one needs to be healthy and good health can be achieved by following the principles of Ayurveda.

SHARAD Ritucharya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the autumn

SHARAD Ritucharya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the autumn

It’s subtle, yet it is there. Change is in the air, I can feel the weather changing. The green of the leaves has changed to red, gold….. The rustle of the falling leaves, a little drop in temperature, a cool breeze especially in the early morning and late evenings … all indicate that autumn is knocking at our doors. So it’s time for my next post, sharad ritucharaya or the ayurvedic regimen for the autumn season.

During rainy season, prior to sharad ritu the weather is moist and the sky is cloudy. However in Sharad Ritu or autumn season, the sanchit Pitta Dosha of the rainy season gets aggravated because of exposure to the warm sun rays. Due to vitiation of Pitta, ayurveda recommends food with bitter, sweet and astringent tastes.

Sharad Ritu Charya

Diet
Lifestyle
Food should be madhur (sweet), laghu (light) and tikta (bitter)

Rice, wheat (Godhuma), moong (green gram), yava (barley), honey, and milk should be a part of diet.

Ghrit (Clarified butter) especially with tikta (bitter) herbs is recommended to pacify pitta.

Foods like Vasa (Fat), Oil, Curd and meat of aquatic animals should not be consumed.

Sour (khatte) products should not be taken in this season.

Ayurveda recommends that one should sit in moonlight during the early hours of night, as it has a soothing effect on the aggravated dosha.

Use of purgatives is advocated in ayurvedic texts, for this season.

Sleeping during the day is not recommended

Too much exertion and physical exercise is not advised in this season.

This season comes just before winters. So the weather is cooler than summers. Dress warmly and avoid too many outdoor activities.

Some more suggestions to Stay healthy this Fall

The season is changing and this affects us physically and mentally. This is the time of the year when there is maximum chance of dosha imbalance. One may experience fatigue, stress, mild constipation, Amalapitta (Acidity), Sheetpitta (Urticaria), Kandu( Itching) etc. This can be prevented by maintaining the internal balance of doshas . Establish a regular daily routine, stay calm, warm and nourished. Drink lukewarm water and sip spiced green tea. Utilize the energy within and focus attention inwards. Establish healthy routine, plan new beginnings, take care of your health and cherish the beautiful season to understand your own self, holistically.

I sincerely hope by following the regimen mentioned above one can transition smoothly into the next coming season, the hemant ritu or winters with good health and insight. I am looking forward to questions and suggestions related to the above topic.

Manage Stress with Ayurveda

Manage Stress with Ayurveda

Stress is normal physical response to situations that make a person feel threatened or insecure. Stress response is generated when a person senses danger, which could be real or imaginary. It’s a way our body has been attuned naturally to protect itself and be secure from danger. Some stress is needed to keep us motivated and to accomplish our goals. Stress becomes a problem when it starts affecting our physical, emotional and social health in a negative way. We need professional help when stress starts affecting our health, mood, relationships, productivity……. i.e. the overall quality of life. It is not so difficult to manage stress. The secret lies in our own ability to handle the day to day challenges of life in a positive way.

Ayurveda attributes inability to understand our deeper inner self as one of the causes of stress. When an individual is unable to balance the real self (what we are) with the ideal self (what we desire to become) it results in stress. However the main cause of stress is the Imbalance of Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

The above lines are a part of my post for Ask Veda.To read the complete article, please click on the link provided                   http://www.askveda.in/blog/manage-stress-with-ayurveda-by-dr-moninder-kaur/

By adopting the guidelines mentioned in the article, one can experience a reduction in tension. The techniques are also helpful in restoring the dosha imbalance leading to a relaxed mind and body.

Wishing Good Health to the readers and don’t forget to BE POSITIVE WITH LIFE.

Varsha Ritu Charya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the Rainy Season

 Varsha Ritu Charya:
Ayurvedic Regimen for the Rainy Season

I love when it rains. The cloudy sky, the soothing downpour, the water droplets resting on green leaves, the beautiful rainbows…..all are welcome after the scorching heat of the tropical summers. According to Ayurveda the year can be divided into six seasons. Each season (ritu) lasting for two months. The Grishma ritu (summer season) is followed by Varsha ritu (Rainy season). Ritu means season and charya means regimen. Ritucharya is the observance of diet and regimen according to the seasonal changes.  In earlier article I had talked about the Ayurvedic regimen for summers. Since the rains have already started in India, It’s appropriate to discuss about the Varsha ritu charya or the Regimen for the rainy season as per Ayurvedic Texts.
Varsha ritu or the rainy season is the first season of the ‘Visarg Kaal’ i.e. the southern cycle of the sun. The heat of the sun starts to reduce in this season. The breeze becomes gentle. The physical ‘bal’ or strength starts to increase moderately as compared to the previous ‘grishma ritu’. However the ‘jatharagni’ or the digestive power is still low. The sky is predominantly cloudy and there is an increase in the atmospheric moisture. Thus the ‘vayu’ dosha is primarily vitiated and there is secondary vitiation of ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’
Due to the vitiation of doshas, this is a season when we are more prone to diseases. Various methods to balance the doshas along with effective measures to enhance digestive functions need to be adopted. Panchkarma is recommended during the rainy season.

                                         Varsha Ritu Charya

Diet
Lifestyle
Food should be easily digestible, hot and light.
Ghee, curd and honey can be incorporated in diet.
Pulses, meat, soups, old grains and mastu (thin water of yogurt) is recommended in diet.
Leafy vegetables should be used sparingly.
Ginger, black pepper and lemon juice may be used to promote better digestion.
Use of clean drinking water is advised.
Wine prepared from grapes and fermented decoctions can be taken during this season.

Too much exertion and overexposure to sunlight should be avoided
 Perfumes may be used.
Avoid sleeping during the day.
Avoid taking bath in rivers and pools.
Wear proper clothes to protect yourself from the cold winds and rain.
Apply warm oil to the body before taking bath.
Protect yourself from insect bites during this season.

Some more suggestions for a healthy rainy season

  • One needs to stay active during this season. As the out-door activities are not possible in this season it’s advised to incorporate indoor physical activities in your daily routine.
  • Proper foot care, especially for the diabetics is needed as feet often tend to get wet during this season.
  •  A light massage with neem oil and sesame oil, prior to bath can prevent from skin infection and itching.
  • Lukewarm water bath is better than cold water bath. It helps to balance ‘vata’.
  •   Do not let your head stay wet for a long time.
  • Keep the body fully covered and avoid sleeveless dresses in this season.
  •  Drink lukewarm water. This will keep the ‘Agni’ balanced.
  •  Panchkarma treatments are highly recommended in this season.

Varsha Ritu is a time when a person is more prone to diseases. If we can incorporate, even a few suggestions made above, in our daily routine or charya, we can rest assured to enjoy a disease free, healthy, rainy season ahead.

Grishma Ritu Charya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the Summer

Grishma Ritu Charya: Ayurvedic Regimen for the Summer

It’s around 10 a.m. in the morning. The Sun is already too bright for comfort. The temperatures are soaring and the heat is unbearable…………….  Its summer time (Grishma Ritu) in India.  My first impulse is to grab a bottle of chilled water and gulp it down. The relief is temporary. As the day proceeds tolerance for hot weather reduces and desire to stay indoors in air conditioned environment wins.

“Balanced diet provides strength, vitality, happiness and long life, yet it is seen that despite eating a balanced diet, people fall ill. “The statement has been discussed in Charak Samhita (Sutrasthanam). With above thought as the basis, the condition of nature and body in six seasons along with the healthy regimen or ‘Charya’ for each season has been explored. Keeping the present season in limelight, I would share the regimen mentioned in Ayurvedic texts for a healthy balanced summer.

According to Ayurveda, chilled foods and beverages disrupt the digestive power called Agni. The Agni or digestive power can be compared to burning logs. If we dump cold water over burning logs the fire goes out. Thereby indigestion, acidity, reduced appetite….follow. Grishma ritu has been described as a season of dehydration, exhaustion and lack of energy.  The key to good health in summers is to keep this ‘Agni’ balanced.

                                             Grishma Ritu Charya

Diet
Lifestyle
Food should be sweet, light and more of liquids should be taken.
Wine and Alcohol should not be consumed
Boiled rice, meats, curd (yogurt) can be incorporated in diet.
Drink cold water from an earthen pot. In case you like to have refrigerated water, take it out from refrigerator and let it rest for 15 minutes before consuming.
Fresh fruits, fresh juices, salads are recommended.
Take bath in cold water. Body pack made from chandan is recommended.
Stay in cool and shady place.
Wear loose light cotton clothes
It has been advised to sleep during the day as the nights are short
Too much exertion, physical exercise and over exposure to sun should be avoided.

Some more suggestions to keep cool this summer

v  Watermelon, fresh cucumber, lettuce are very beneficial to maintain the balance of Pitta and can be consumed.
v  Coconut water is an excellent source to stay rehydrated in summers.
v  Fresh, cooling herbs like mint (pudina), Cilantro (hara dhaniya), Watercress (jalakumbhi) can be juiced or made into chutney and consumed.
v  Favor cooling spices like cardamom, coriander and fennel when cooking.
v  Fresh fruit juices are good rejuvenators in summer.
Over time, if you incorporate even a few suggestions in your daily routine you can notice a major difference in your reaction to the blazing heat of the shining sun in summer.
